Must Reads!

I love books. If you had to know just one thing about me, let it be that I love books.

Lately I've been on a Historical Fiction kick.
I discovered the "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon a little over a year ago and have since become completely obsessed with all things Scottish Highlander. I even researched my husband's ancestry just to find out what clan he belongs to and lo and behold, the Croxford's weren't even Scottish but the Mexican side of his family had a whole long lineage of Highlanders. Who'da thunk it?
Clan Hume, thank you very much.
No whiny Lowlanders for this family!

Oh but I digress.

Books, we were talking about books!
I've got another 5 months of waiting until the "Outlander" graphic novel "The Exile"comes out and in the meantime I need something else to fill the void.

(I have been known to read a Vampire book or 2- hey, don't hold it against me, and for those that haven't read a single word but hate all over it out of some sense of superiority- get over yourself. There are literary references in the Twilight series that I bet most of the haters wouldn't even understand.)

Again, I am off on a tangent, haha.
Anyhow, as I was saying, I need some books to fill the void so here are my current "To Read" books:

"Her Fearful Symmetry" by Audrey Niffenger (she wrote "The Time Traveler's Wife", which is an amazing book, so well written & gritty. Nothing at all like the movie which was just.....not good.)

"The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold (if you've read it, let me know if it's worth it and the same goes for seeing the movie)

"Rabit, Run" by John Updike (because who didn't love "The Witches of Eastwick"?)

Ok, those are mine, now do you have any recommendations for me? Wanna borrow a book or two?
I'd love to do a book swap!

  1. I've been reading three books for the last YEAR! I am reading twlight right now because it was a gift and I am waiting to be wowed, but hey, it's pretty fast reading. I'm also reading Dear John by Nicholas Sparks which is pretty good but I saw the movie before reading it which makes the book duller than it otherwise would be if I was using my own imagination. I am also reading the Wind Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murakami which is excellent but I put it down because it was making me too emotional during a rough time. I should pick it up again.

I really liked the movie "The Lovely Bones." Even if it turns out to be nothing like the book, the imagination in the movie is pretty cool.

  2. You will not be wowed by Twilight, but it is a good time-filler and it will remind you of High School and the way "love" was so consuming.

"The Wind Up Bird Chronicle" looks really good, I think that is right up my alley.

  3. As any book vs. movie situation, the movie is not as good as the book. The film maker of course had to leave out and slightly alter some of the story to make it fit into a film. If you go into it with the expectation that it won't be as good as the book, then I think you're fine. The movie, on it's own merits, is a great movie. I feel like Marky Mark and Rachel Weiss are a little to young and pretty for the roles but they are great actors and did a great job.

I am big on the old Oprah books...."Jewel", "Midwives", "The Poisonwood Bible", "The Red Tent", "Icy Sparks" are all favorites of mine.

  4. I picked up "The Poisonwood Bible" awhile back and keep meaning to read it. Is it a good read?

And I have a hard time with Marky Mark.
I just picture Andy Samberg saying
"Say hello to ya Mutha for me" whenever I see his face, haha

  5. Hey Casey, I wouldn't recommend 'The lovely bones' in my opinion it was BORING!

I recommend that you read the new Jodi Picoult book that recently came out. It is called 'House Rules' it is about a boy who is an Aspie. It was a great book, but then again I am a little partial to Jodi Picoult. She is my all time favorite writers.

I just watched "My Sister's Keeper" and cried like a baby. I will give "House Rules" a try, thanks!
